Use the Coding Assistant

Get ICD-10 code suggestions from the chart documents, right under the diagnosis table.

Open the OASIS on the QA+ Review page

The Coding Assistant is part of the QA+ Review page. It is not on the normal Kinnser OASIS page.

Run the review. Start from the Hotbox, or from the OASIS menu.

Wait for the review to finish.

The Coding Assistant sits under the Kinnser diagnosis table on the Active Diagnosis page.

Click Coding Assistant in the page list on the left. It is right under Active Diagnosis, and it takes you straight to the panel.

You can also click Active Diagnosis and scroll down past the diagnosis table.

Click Collapse at the top right to hide the panel, and Expand to show it again.

Oasis Summary. The answers from this OASIS that matter for coding.
Previous Codes. The codes from the patient's last OASIS.
Medications. The medication list for this visit.
Coding Assistant. Where you choose the documents and run the analysis. This tab is open when the panel loads.
Strategies. Only shows when Beta coding strategies is on in Settings.

Choose the documents and the speed, then start.

Under Attachments, Orders, and Misc, check the documents you want the Coding Assistant to read. Click a document name to open it in a new tab.
All documents are checked when the panel opens. For a document with more than 200 pages, type the pages to include, for example 1-4, 7, 9-15.

Choose a speed: Fast, Regular, or Smart. Smart is the most thorough. Fast is the quickest, but it may miss items. The estimated time shows under the buttons.

Check Show Coding Summary if you want a summary of the coding evidence. The summary also lists contradictions between the doctor's documents and the OASIS or the medication profile.

Click Run Analysis. A progress bar shows while it works.

The results show each suggested code with its description and the reason for it.

Read the ICD Codes tab. Each row has an ICD-10 code, a description, and a reason.

Click the + next to a code to add it to the diagnosis table above. Codes that are already in the table do not have a +.

Under the suggestions, a yellow row lists the codes already in the table that the Coding Assistant did not suggest. Check whether they still belong.

If you checked Show Coding Summary, click the Coding Summary tab to read it.

Check every code in the diagnosis table before you finish.
The Coding Assistant is a helper. A qualified coder or clinician must verify each code before it is used.

QA+ checks the primary diagnosis against PDGM. It does not change the code for you.

A red blinking triangle next to Active Diagnosis in the page list means the primary diagnosis is not accepted by PDGM.

The same warning shows under the primary code in the diagnosis table. Choose a different primary diagnosis, or move an accepted code to the first row.
